Oct 10-13 :  Building up a tictactoe program a) draw the grid and an O and an X   b) keep track of what boxes are already in use via an array variable, and see where the mouse clicks c) if the box isn’t in use, mark it in use and draw in the correct place on screen d) swap between players X and O  Get the Sample File here: ttt9_yourName  and the instructions here: TTT Instructions
Next Week: check to see if there is a winner or all squares are used e) make it fancier than x vs o by drawing coloured figures instead

Oct 2-6 :  Event driven program – following the mouse to create a drawing program, detecting where it clicks to produce colour changes etc.

Sep 25 – 29:   More Logo – using Math to analyze triangles and calculate averages and lettergrades, using IF and nested IFELSE.

Sep 18-22: Logo Programming : M-T: learn basic programming commands in Logo to create a picture
Wed-Thurs : Get all assignments up to date – Posture, CCCC, FACE and the Binary Math  sheet.  Friday -TFR !

Sep 11-15 : Keyboarding  – use as lessons and tests, but first as a guide to safety – what posture and computer set-up should you have to avoid RSI like carpal tunnel syndrome? Save 5 tips in a Word document called posture_YourName .  More hardware discussion about memory (RAM, ROM, EEPROM, hard disks, CD and DVD and BluRay), CPU, peripherals (mouse, keyboard, printer, network card, router) and what constitutes a ‘computer’ (smartphone, Xbox, disc player, TV, thermostat?, dishwasher!! ).  Classifications of ‘computers’ in our homes and elsewhere.

Sep. 7-8 : How does the computer store numbers, text, sound, pictures etc. ? The On/Off of binary digits (bits) combine in groups of 8 (byte) to represent numbers (from 0 to 255) using the binary number (e.g. 1011 = 1*8+0*4+1*2+1*1 = eleven in decimal).  Numbers can also be used to represent the colours of pixels in  a picture, the volume or frequency of a sound, or all the characters on the keyboard (ASCII codes the number 97 as lower-case ‘a’ ).

This course is meant to introduce you to the knowledge, skills and issues involved with computer and internet usage.

You will research topics and present your knowledge in a variety of formats that can include print, graphic, audio/visual, presentation, web page and programs. Naturally we will be using the internet extensively and most of your time will be spent working independently on tasks. You are responsible for keeping yourself focused on the tasks and not using the internet or the computer for any other purpose.

You will also be responsible for maintaining the security of your computer account, school assigned Google account, and all files stored on your network drive or memory sticks. All of these are to be used for school activities only, other files may be removed without prior notice.

You should also refer to the Acceptable Internet Use Form.



Tests, including typing speed     15% Assignments – long and short projects 85%


Projects and assignments will be marked according to a rubric supplied in advance. The first test will be preceded by a sample test so that students know what to expect in format and content.

Students absent for tests must make-up the test as soon as possible upon return to school (usually the next day).
